Family reunion in beautiful, quiet Julian, California

Every year my family gets together for a family reunion for a long weekend. We generally stay in a VRBO property so we can get the most time together and we have our private space. This year, we opted for the beautiful, quiet mountain town of Julian, CA. This year we had a small group of 8 adults and 1 infant (my daughter Indy). The property number is 3105969.

Indy and me ready for our family reunion in Julian!

When searching for a location, we try to stay somewhere we haven’t been to before and has lots to do. This was our 18th year getting together for our annual summer weekend, and we had never stayed in Julian. We could not find much on the Julian calendar from their website, their instagram account had more information. I had heard there was a great main street area with shopping and a local brewery with some great eats and brews that we added to our list.

Living area, with beautiful view of the surrounding areas.

We checked into the house around 2pm and get settled. The house was the perfect size for a small gathering. There were 2 main bedrooms, and in the main bedroom, there is an upstairs loft. One bedroom had a queen bed, the main bedroom had a king bed, and the upstairs loft had 2 twin beds and a twin size trundle. The main living area was open to the kitchen and dining and had floor to ceiling windows and had an amazing view of the local area.

Main Bedroom with stairs leading up to loft.

The house was well stocked with clean towels and linens, dishes and silverware. The house was clean and the air conditioner worked great, considering it was 100 degrees in Julian during our July weekend. Outside on the wrap around patio where 2 rocking chairs and table, perfect for morning coffee. There was a hot tub that was set to the perfect temperature and the outdoor fire pit seating was an added plus for our stay. We also really enjoyed the game garage that included a wetbar!

Game garage, perfect for a family gathering

The house is located within walking distance to the main street shopping area and they had a small path that cut through the hillside for an easy walk. We had family members of all ages with us and everyone had an easy time walking down the path to the small shopping area.

Walking path from the house to Main street.

On the first day, we stayed at the house and played games in the well stocked garage. The poker table was perfect for our dice game and the wet bar kept our wine nice and cold! There were a variety of games in the garage to entertain all ages including shuffleboard, darts and an electronic video game console with vintage video games. On Friday, we walked down the path to Main street and shopped all the little mountain shops and ate lunch at the popular “Moms”. We got sandwiches and a slices of the delicious Julian pies. Saturday we checked out the local Julian Brew Company which had lots of outdoor seating and a bbq menu.

Enjoying a hard cider at Julian Brew Company.

Overall, we really enjoyed our stay at this quiet mountain house in Julian for our family reunion. This house would be a wonderful addition for a small family gathering and we look forward to coming back in the winter and seeing that view covered in snow!

Prescott, Arizona

For a quick family vacation, I love going to Prescott, Arizona. It is a fun quick family vacation and there are lots of activities for kids and young families. The area has a small town feel, and has lots of history and interesting places to visit. The downtown Prescott area hosts activities throughout the year like a Bluegrass festival, 4th of July parade and a great place to see holiday lights in the winter. Here are a few of the family friendly activities available in Prescott.

Mini Bowling at Espire Sports

Mini Bowling at Espire Sports at the Gateway Mall

Located at the Prescott Gateway Mall, you can find Espire Sports, a large indoor pickleball center that is popular with locals. For pickleball, you need a membership, but there are other activities inside you can find including Mini Bowling for only $5 a game. This is perfect for toddlers and young kids. The lanes come with bumpers and the balls are the perfect size for little hands.

Toddler Time at Get Air

The new Get Air trampoline park has a time specifically for kids under 46 inches tall, called Toddler Time. Check their website for the most current times here. Toddler time is set for 2 hour time slots during the week and during the school year, the entire park is open for young children. My son loved being able to roam the entire trampoline park with kids his age without worry!

Prescott Zoo

This is a great little zoo that is very walkable for everyone. They have the zoo animals you would normally find, in addition to local wildlife like coyotes and Javalina. They have lots of activities you can sign up for like Breakfast with the animals, Summer Zoo Fest and a Paint and Sip evening. You can even see the bear getting his lunch if that’s something you are into.

Park Collective

We like to frequent the playgrounds in Prescott as a free activity for the kids, and we found this great indoor playground called Park Collective. Inside, you can find a toddler area and a big kid area, completely covered and indoors for fun all year long. Lots of seating around the playground and a small coffee shop inside makes for a great time for everyone all year long. Check out their website here.

There is so much history in downtown Prescott and the court house a great place to visit with the family. There is an ice cream shop across the street, lots of shopping and the famous Whiskey Row. The courthouse is often decorated for holidays and the main stage for yearly events. There is a large 4th of July Parade hosted here and a yearly Bluegrass festival. Make sure to check out the olive oil store!

Granite Mountain Hotshot Memorial

Located nearby in Yarnell, Arizona, there is a memorial dedicated to the Hotshot crew that lost their lives in a Yarnell Wildfire. Park in the small parking lot at the bottom of the trail, and a short hike you will arrive at the memorial. This is a great, free activity for active families. The hike has some uphill sections, and can get quite hot, especially in the summertime so come prepared with plenty of water.

Prescott has a lot of fun activities for families, email me and let me plan your family vacation to this cute all American town!

Family Road Trip Tips

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

At least twice a year I take the kids on a road trip from San Diego, CA to Prescott, AZ which is about a 7 hour drive normally, but of course with kids takes quite a bit longer. Over the past 3 years, we have perfected the trip on what to pack and where to stop. This trek is mostly through the Arizona and California desert, so we always make sure to be prepared with lots of extra water and snacks. My Subaru also has the capability to have wifi, which I always activate before we take the trip as it works with having cell service through wifi calling and it is also great for the kids’ ipads. The wifi is only $25 for 1 month, and I cancel as soon as I get home so it only ever costs me 1 month and I feel its worth the $25 for that peace of mind if we ever needed cell reception in the middle of the desert.

When I first started to make the drive, finding where to stop was also challenging. I need a place to stop that had clean bathrooms, had an area for changing diapers and also a safe place to run around. The rest stops along the way, never had any changing tables for diapers, and the car was so packed, I couldn’t change diapers in the back of the car like normal, so I would be changing diapers on the front seat. While manageable, it was not ideal. One trip, I happened to stop at a Home Depot in the last big city I was heading through before the real desert driving began, and realized it was the perfect place to stop. The women’s bathrooms were spotless, had changing tables and a great place to let the kids stretch their legs for a bit. I just park the car, and take a long walk through the garden center and through the store to the restrooms. It’s the perfect first stop on our family road trip. I also found an outside, free museum on the way that is a great place to stop. There is also an app you can download called Roadtrippers that you can plug in your destination and starting point and can find fun stops along the way. This app is best when you are not doing mostly desert driving, but has some great ideas for break up a family road trip.

Of course, bringing the ipad is a lifesaver for when road trip fun starts to wear off for the kids, but there are some other great things we found that the kids enjoy for the trip. The Melissa and Doug water coloring is mess free and great for the car. This Blippi search book is easy for young kids as well. Here are a few more ideas that my kids love for the car ride:

Travel Tin Magnetic Dress Up

Stickers

Pop Tube Toys

Of course, before I make any road trip or long car ride, I ensure that I am prepared for anything. As I mentioned earlier, water and snacks are key, but of course, I want to be prepared in case of an emergency or vehicle breakdown. I like to keep a portable jumper in the car, which I love because it can also charge my phone. I like to have this car first aid kit just in case as well as this emergency vehicle breakdown kit.

What do you like to take on a family road trip?

Top 5 destinations for a family reunion vacation in Southern California

Reminiscing over our yearly family reunion trips, I have 5 spots that really stand out. These locations in southern California would all be great to visit in any season and have lots of hotel and VRBO options to really make for a fun and comfortable vacation. When considering a family reunion location, start with making a list of those family members that will be there and their ages. While seemingly very simple, this will ensure you are finding a spot that would be great for everyone attending. I always like a location with lots of activities and walkable if possible. Here are my favorites:

  1. Mission Beach

Located in San Diego, Mission Beach has so much to do for every generation. There is a great, wide walking path along the beach front that is great for a leisurely stroll catching up with family, or some roller skating in the sun. Belmont Park is great for the kids of the family where they can take a ride on the famous Giant Dipper roller coaster or visit The Plunge pool to try out their new obstacle course in the pool. Sea World San Diego is close by, as well as many restaurants and bars. In addition to everything to do IN mission beach, San Diego has so many things to choose from for any type of vacation!

2. Big Bear

Big Bear is a great option for both summer and winter. During the winter, hit the slopes with your snowboard and catch up with family in the lodge. If kids are in tow, check out Big Bear Snow Play for some inner tubing which is sure to be a great time. During the summer, take a pontoon boat out on the lake and enjoy the sunshine for a relaxing afternoon visiting with family. The downtown Big Bear area has lots of great shopping and restaurants.

3. Palm Springs

We love Palm Springs for family reunions. Most vacation rentals and essentially every hotel has a pool for those fun summer days. The downtown area has tons to offer including shopping, restaurants, and bars. Take a ride on the Palm Springs Ariel Tramway and get breathtaking views that will wow the entire family. Don’t let the temperatures turn you off from this great family reunion location, the city is built for the heat and has lots to do.

4. Long Beach

Long Beach is a treasure trove of fun activities to satisfy the whole family. Visit the amazing Aquarium of the Pacific which has a life size whale hanging in their main lobby. Stay the night on the Queen Mary or take a tour of the famous ship. 2nd street is perfect for a night out with adults or shopping during the day. When we had our family reunion in Long Beach, we rented a gondola and took a quiet boat tour through the many canals.

5. Temecula

Temecula is wonderful for a relaxing weekend in the wineries. Book yourself a wine tour with Grapeline Wine Tours, which we had a great experience with, and they even picked us up from our VRBO which made it extra convenient. The downtown Temecula shopping area had lots to do to entertain everyone in the family including ice cream shops, a line dancing hall, antique shops, and restaurants. There are so many VRBO options to choose from in this area that can accommodate groups of all sizes.

Where is your favorite spot?

3 Tips for planning a destination family reunion

Over the past 15 years, I have taken a yearly summer vacation with multiple generations in my family which we have dubbed “girls weekend”. It started because my grandma was one of five sisters growing up and they all talked about doing a yearly vacation together. We made it happen in the sisters’ honor and it’s been a wonderful family tradition.

With so many years of arranging travel for our yearly family reunion, I have learned what can make or break a great weekend with a large group. Travelling with a group doesn’t have to be expensive and can easily be managed on a tight budget if needed. Here are three tips to get you started on the planning process:

  1. Plan activities ahead of time.

A loose daily itinerary is key with a group. While you can try to wing it, I’ve found that having an idea of what is going to be done each day helps with keeping everyone on schedule to make any planned activities. Even if your itinerary is as simple as shopping in town and dinner at the hotel, this can really help with the potential headache you would be in store for if you tried to plan the daily activities each morning with so many opinions. Stick to 2-3 items on your daily itinerary as to still have flexibility.

2. Create a meal schedule

For our girls weekend trips, we learned early on that assigning each person a meal to make really helped on food costs and not having to worry about figuring out what we were going to do each mealtime. For example, one person plans breakfast on Thursday, another group makes dinner on Thursday, Breakfast at a restaurant on Friday etc. The first few years, we often would end the weekend with so much left over food because everyone was bringing snacks, wine, and desserts, and making a plan really helped minimize the extras.

3. Book a VRBO

Trust me, no one likes to sleep on the floor with hotel couch cushions and if you are doing a destination family reunion with multiple generations- a VRBO is just a superior experience. You get a private area to enjoy everyone’s company and there are so many options in the market where everyone can be comfortable. Hotels can definitely work, but for a family reunion, I have found, having a kitchen and a large area where everyone can be together made for a really enjoyable time. Here is a great VRBO option that would be perfect for a family reunion.

A cruise can also be a really great option for a destination family reunion because there are so many large, open areas available for everyone to gather, and it takes the activities and meal planning out of the equation. Not to mention, groups traveling together on a cruise often receive bigger discounts with the cruise lines. For a family reunion, I’d recommend Carnival, Norwegian, Disney or Royal Caribbean which can accommodate all generations very well.

I hope you find these tips helpful in your future family reunion planning. Let us help you plan your perfect family reunion!
